Research and Development is the only way to keep ahead of the competitors in the marketplace of the world. Pakistan is far below the benchmark fixed by UNECO in 80s. The improvement in the situation as per the figures of 2006 has been insignificant. This needs to change radically. A strong base of R&D provides a crucial foundation for a vibrant program of technology development. It is essential that Pakistan uses its scarce scientific and technological assets as effectively as possible. The immediate priority is to use existing resources devoted to R&D more efficiently to address national and provincial needs. Activities like science clubs, science Quiz contests and science Model Competitions, science and technology Olympiads, Expos, Exhibition and Fairs are being organized regularly globally. I am very happy that NWFP DoST realizing the crucial importance of the activities has designed a comprehensive program to develop scientific temper among the masses especially at school level which are the nurseries for producing scientists or masterminds of the future. I urge the department to expand to both primary school as well as higher education levels for ensuring sustainability of the initiative.
